Greece is a country located in southeastern Europe. Capital and largest city of Greece is Athens. It borders on the east by the Aegean Sea to the west by the Ionian and south of the Mediterranean Sea. Greece is one of the countries with the longest coastline at 13,676 km and has several islands, including Crete.
It has a long and rich history which brought great cultural influence in the three neighboring continents. Here was born the Republic and Philosophy, as well as the Olympic Games.
Greece is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, with the earliest evidence of greek wine dating back to 6500 years ago. Wines from Crete were exported with high prices in northern Europe during medieval period.

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands at 8,336 km² and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and Cyprus.
Crete was the centre of Europe's most ancient civilization, the Minoan.

Crete straddles two climatic zones, the Mediterranean and the North African, mainly falling within the former. As such, the climate in Crete is primarily temperate. The atmosphere can be quite humid, depending on the proximity to the sea. The winter is fairly mild. Snowfall is common on the mountains between November and May, but rare at the low lying areas. The island of Crete has a unique terroir which love both indigenous grape varieties and international.

The island of Crete is divided in four prefectures of Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania and Lassithi. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the area under vines cultivated in Crete is about 25,000 acres, representing 15% of the national vineyard.

DAFNES Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.) wine in Crete, Greece


DAFNES Protected Designation of Origin was established in 1971 and it is the largest of the successive PDO zones of Crete.
The vineyards of PDO Dafnes stretch on the southwestern part of the Heraklion district. The area includes the villages of Dafnes, Avgeniki, Venerato, Kerasia, Siva and more.
